NATCHITOCHES, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior
Henry Rop and sophomore
Shalicia Rochon were the high scorers on the men's and women's side, respectively, for the Lions on day two of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday at the Walter Ledet Track Complex on the campus of Northwestern State University.
The Lions head into final day action on Sunday in sixth place with 20 points. The Lady Lions are in 11th with five points after the first two days.
Rop, who earned All-Southland honors with a third-place finish in Friday's 10,000 meters, provided Southeastern with five points in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Kapsabet, Kenya native covered the course in 9:27.61, finishing in fourth place.
Rop was one of four Lions to score on Saturday. In the long jump, freshman Phillipe Moore (23 feet, 6.25 inches, 6th) and senior
Michael Rheams (23-0.325, 7th) each added to Southeastern's team tally.
Freshman
Mason McGee posted a sixth place finish in the javelin with a throw of 186-10 to earn three points. Junior Steven Atkins finished with 6,006 points to claim one point with an eighth place finish in the decathlon.
All of the Lady Lions' points came in the javelin competition. Rochon finished sixth with a throw of 127-09, while sophomore Chelsea Steele followed in seventh with a 127-03 showing. Rochon nearly pointed in the shot put, finishing 10th with a 44-6 performance.
The Lady Lions will have a chance to add to their point total as five athletes earned trips to Sunday's finals on Sunday. Southeastern's best showing came in the 400 meter hurdles, as freshman
Alicia Noel (1:01.43), freshman
Tess Mullings (1:03.11) and senior
Judith Schultheis (1:03.18) all moved onto to the finals.
Schultheis also qualified in the 100 meter hurdles with a preliminary time of 14.16. Senior
Whitney Curry advanced to the finals in the 1,500 meters (4:48.40) and junior
Tamra Grayson did the same in the 400 meters (56.08). Among the Lion final qualifiers on Saturday were sophomore
Seth Cunningham (800 meters, 1:53.76), sophomore
Abram Taylor (400 meter hurdles, 54.24) and freshman Tavoris Mack (400 meter hurdles, 54.26).
Final day action starts on Sunday at 11 a.m. with the women's triple jump finals. Among the participants in the day's opening event will be Southeastern junior
Michelle Ogashi.
