Colonels Turn in Successful Showing at LSU Alumni Gold

BATON ROUGE - The Colonel sprint and middle distance crews led the way on Saturday as the Nicholls State University women's track and field team turned in an impressive day at the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday.

Nicholls was led by junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun, who clocked a season best time of 11.63 in the 100 m dash to move her up to 32nd in the NCAA East Region.  Calhoun returned later in the day to clock in with a time of 24.04 in the 200 m to take second place and set a new school record.  The Morgan City, La. native shattered the previous school record of 24.52 set by teammate Katrina Bettard at the Ole Miss Invitational earlier this season.

Meanwhile, senior distance runner Kadi Whisnant clocked in with a second place time of 4:33.88 in the 1500 m run, giving her a season-best time and placing her second in the Southland Conference rankings behind teammate Jessica McLeod.  McLeod and fellow senior distance runner Imma Kosgei joined Whisnant by turning in impressive showings in the 800 m.  McLeod clocked in with a time of 2:14.52 to take second place and finish just two seconds off her school record time.  Kosgei was hot on her heels, taking third with a time of 2:14.71.

The Colonels will return to action at the Houston Invitational on May 1.
