AUSTIN, Texas – Kovey Simmons shattered the school record in the men's pole vault with a mark of 17 feet, 0.75 inches to pace the Southeastern Louisiana track and field team at the 84th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
Simmons, whose previous best mark of the season was 16-0.75, cleared the bar on the final attempt on his first two marks before breaking the school record of 17-0.50 set by Walter Latapie in 1993. Simmons, a junior from DeRidder, finished tied for the top mark in the event with Alex Bentley of Houston and BYU's Tanner Emrich.
“Kovey in the pole vault was outstanding,” Southeastern track coach
Sean Brady said. “He competed very well against some of the top athletes in the country and would have won the event had he not had some misses earlier in the competition.”
Michael Rheams finished seventh overall in the men's triple jump after posting a mark of 49-10 while
Abram Taylor turned in impressive times in the 110-meter hurdles (14.82) and 400-meter hurdles (55.13). The men's 4x1,500-meter relay team finished 10th overall after posting a time of 16 minutes, 52.58 seconds.
Judith Schultheis finished 19th overall in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:01.52) and was 40th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.38) while
Tess Mullings (1:03.21) and
Alicia Noel (1:03.28) each competed in the 400-meter hurdles.
