Colonels Set a Pair of School Records on Day One of LSU Relays

Junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun and freshman thrower Kerri Simmons led the way for the Colonels on Friday night as the duo led the Nicholls State University women's track team by setting a pair of school records on the first day of the LSU Relays at the Bernie Moore Track Complex on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.

Calhoun delivered a strong performance in the 100 M dash prelims, qualifying for Saturday's finals with the fifth fastest preliminary time of the day in a very deep pool of sprinters.  The Morgan City, La. native's time of 11.79 shaved 0:00.01 off her own school record time, bettering her previous record of 11.80 set at the 2010 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

Calhoun was joined by Simmons who finished sixth on the night and recorded the best mark in school history with a throw of 13.95 m (45 ft. 9.25 in.), bettering the previous school record of 44 ft. 6.25 in. by over a foot.

The Colonels will conclude the LSU Relays on Saturday with the final day of competition slated to begin at 10 a.m.
