Pole Vaulters Sweep As Southeastern Competes At Louisiana Classics

 LAFAYETTE – Pole vaulters Kovey Simmons and Brittany Pfantz each swept to individual titles while Chelsey Steele claimed the title in the women’s javelin to lead the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team at the Louisiana Classics on Saturday. 

Simmons claimed first place in the men’s event clearing the bar at 16 feet, 0.75 inches while Pfantz captured first place in the women’s event at 12-5.50. Steele recorded a throw of 146-8 in the javelin to edge Aja Scott of Nicholls State. 

On the men’s side, the Lions had several top-five finishes highlighted by second-place finishes by Henry Rop in the 10,000-meter run (32:19.23) and Paul Arthur in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:30.88). 

Arthur also posted a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters (34:03.31) while teammate Jesse McDavitt was fifth (34:48.82) and Matt Moutonsixth (36:14.80). Tavoris Mack placed third overall in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (55.68), Michael Lee was sixth in the 800-meter run (1:57.03) and Seth Cunningham finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run (4:03.83). 

In field events, Phillippe Moore finished fourth overall in the long jump (22-6.25) to pace the Lions with Brandon Daniels finishing seventh in the triple jump (45-2.50) and Michael Rheams eighth in the long jump (21-11). 

On the women’s side, Bethany Burst was second in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:22.92) while Lindsey Toups was third (14:00.73).

Alicia Noel finished sixth overall in 400-meter hurdles (1:05.27) whileTamra Grayson was seventh in the 400-meter dash (58.48), Whitney Curry eighth in the 1,500-meters (4:51.74) and Emily McAfee eighth in the 5,000-meter run (20:54.37). 

In women’s field events, Colleen Butler finished third overall in the pole vault (11-9.75) and Renada Living finished sixth in the hammer throw (162-7).
