Nicholls Track Gears Up for Outdoor Opener

THIBODAUX - After turning in one of the most successful indoor seasons in the history of the program, the Nicholls State University women's track and field team turns it's attention to the 2011 outdoor campaign when the Colonels head to Lafayette for the 2011 Louisiana Classics hosted by UL-Lafayette.

The Colonels turned in a record 2010-11 indoor campaign, concluding with the program's best ever finish at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in February.  Nicholls racked up 48 points and finished eighth, marking the highest point total and best team finish in program history for an indoor conference meet.  Nicholls saw three six different Colonels earn all-conference accolades.  Freshman thrower Kerri Simmons, junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun and the distance medley relay team of Calhoun, freshman Jackie White, senior Kadi Whisnant and senior Jessica McLeod all earning All-Southland honors with the DMR team taking first place to give Nicholls its first ever event championship at the indoor conference meet.

Highlighting the 2011 outdoor season opener for the Colonels will be the debut of the Nicholls javelin crew.  After sending former javelin thrower, and current assistant track coach, Leslie Bourgeois to the national championship meet three times, Nicholls has made itself one of the most renowned javelin programs in the region.  Leading the way is sophomore Aja Scott will return to action after qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Championship East Preliminary meet as a freshman.  Scott is joined by returnees Danielle Daigle and Anna Foulds as well as freshmen Emily Rankin and Jaimee Springer.

The 2011 Louisiana Classics gets underway at 5 p.m. on Friday with the women's shot put.  Most events will be run in the second and final day of the meet on Saturday.
