Shallow Closes Stellar Lion Career at NCAA Indoor Championships

Senior to compete in weight throw on Saturday

Adonson Shallow will compete for the national weight throw title on Saturday
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana senior Adonson Shallow will close out his collegiate career on Saturday, when he competes at the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the Texas A&M campus.

Shallow, a native of Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, will be one of 16 student-athletes to compete for the national weight throw title on Saturday at 5 p.m. In his last competition, Shallow threw a season-best 73-3.13 feet at the LSU Last Chance meet – the second-best throw in the nation this season. Only Walter Henning of LSU's throw of 76-6.11 feet bested Shallow this spring.

Shallow became the first male student-athlete in school history to compete in the national indoor championships last season. Southeastern head coach Sean Brady believes Shallow can best last season's performance, when he finished one spot out of the finals.

“Adonson is as physically ready as he can be heading into this meet,” Brady commented. “We think he has a legitimate shot at a top three finish and would be surprised if he didn't come back to Hammond with All-American honors.”

A strong performance would put a fitting cap on one of the greatest track careers in Southeastern history. Shallow is a five-time Southland Conference champion, four-time Southland Conference Outstanding Field Performer, the 2010 Southland Outdoor Athlete of the Year and the 2009 Southland Indoor Newcomer of the Year.

In 2010, he was named the South Central Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association after earning All-America honors with a fourth place finish in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He is also the league record holder in the weight throw.

“Regardless of how he finishes this weekend, Adonson is the most accomplished student-athlete we've had in my time at Southeastern,” Brady commented. “He holds school records in four different events, has helped us win a Southland Outdoor Championship and has helped our program gain recognition on the national level.

“The only student-athlete in our program's history who left with as many individual records was Christine Amertil, who is a three-time Olympian,” Brady added. “Adonson has a similarly bright future ahead of him.”

Shallow will compete in the first of two flights on Saturday. Live scoring for the NCAA Championships will be available at NCAA.com.
