Kovey Simmons highlighted the Southeastern Louisiana men's and women's track and field team's performance on the opening day of the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Friday at the Mosier Indoor Facility.
The men's team sits in sixth place after the opening action with 16 points, as Simmons (pole vault), freshman
Phillippe Moore (long jump) and the distance medley team all pointed for the Lions. Living and sophomore
Shalicia Rochon accounted for all 11 of the Lady Lions' points in the weight throw, leading Southeastern to a 10th-place finish after the opening day.
The biggest upset on day one for Southeastern was the failure of senior
Adonson Shallow to defend his weight throw title. Shallow, the reigning Southland Indoor Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year, fouled on all his throws in Friday's competition.
“This wasn't our best day, although we had some good things happen,” Southeastern assistant coach Brian Mondschein commented. “Adonson not pointing in the weight throw was disappointing and is likely to going to hurt our overall finish. But, Renada and Shalicia both topped their personal records by three feet in the weight and we were also really pleased with the efforts of Kovey and Phillippe. We're not done yet and we have a chance to come back and have a better final day.”
Living finished second in the weight throw, posting a throw of 57 feet (17.37 meters), while Rochon's throw of 53-3.75 (16.25 meters) was good for sixth place.
Simmons finished third in the pole vault, clearing 16-4.75 (5.00 meters) to give Southeastern six points. Moore's best leap of the indoor season – 23-6.75 (7.18 meters) – earned him fourth place and five points for the Lions.
In the distance medley, sophomore
Seth Cunningham, freshman
Cameron Lawrence, freshman
Shaquille Brown and senior Michael Lee finished fourth to add five points to the Lion total. With 2,591 points, junior
Stephen Atkinson is seventh in the heptathlon with three events remaining on Saturday.
The Stephen F. Austin women and the UTSA men lead after the opening day of action. Saturday's final day action begins at 8:30 a.m.
