Shallow Wins Twice; Lions Impressive At Houston Indoor Invite

Lions earn five top-5 finishes in 20-team meet

Adonson Shallow continued his impressive start, earning individual wins in the shot put and weight throw, and the Southeastern Louisiana University indoor track and field team turned in a solid performance as the Houston Indoor Invitational concluded late Saturday at Yeoman Fieldhouse.

The wins by Shallow, his second and third overall in four events this season, capped off a weekend that saw Southeastern record five top-5 finishes while competing against 20 schools, including nine from the Southland Conference.

Shallow captured the shot put with a throw of 58 feet, 2.50 inches, nearly three feet better than second-place finisher Jacob Domingue of Louisiana-Lafayette, before claiming the weight throw with a mark of 68-10.

Jerel Butler finished fourth overall in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 49.99 seconds. Michelle Ogashi finished fourth overall in the women's triple jump (39-6) and was 10th in the long jump (17-6.75), while Brittany Pfantz was fifth overall in the women's pole vault (11-7.75).

Highlighting other Lady Lions who finished in the top 10, Renada Living finished seventh overall in the women's weight throw (51-11.50), Shalicia Rochon placed ninth in the shot put (43-8.50) and Colleen Butler was 10th in the pole vault (11-1.75).

Judith Schultheis placed 11th in the women's 60-meter hurdles (8.80) with Jessica Fekete finishing 12th in the weight throw (48-4.50), Nia Stewart 13th in the long jump (16-0.25) and Whitney Curry 17th in the mile run (5:17.73).

Stephen Atkinson was one of eight Lions to earn top-10 finishes after finishing eighth overall in the heptathlon with 4,315 points. Johnel Reams finished seventh overall in the high jump (6-6.25) while Michael Rheams finished seventh in the triple jump (47-7) and 10th in the long jump (22-7.25).

The men's 4x400-meter relay team finished eighth overall (3:24.52) while Kovey Simmons was eighth in the pole vault (14-11), Antonio Herbert ninth in the 400-meters (50.23) and Henry Rop 10th in the 3,000-meter run (8:44.38).

Butler added a 12th-place finish in the 200 meters (22.76) with Shaquille Brown finishing 15th in the 800-meters (1:58.78), Matt Mouton 15th in the 5,000-meters (16:56.37), Seth Cunningham 16th in the 800-meters (1:58.84), Joseph LeGrange 17th in the 5,000-meters (17:09.50) and Phillippe Moore 17th in the long jump (22-0.25).

Southeastern will return to action with a pair of events beginning Friday. The Lions will travel to Lake Charles to compete in the McNeese State Indoor II before returning to Houston on Saturday to compete in the Houston All-Comers Meet.
