Stephen Atkinson will compete in the heptathlon beginning Friday at the Houston Indoor Invitational
HAMMOND – Fresh off its season debut two weeks ago, the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team returns to action beginning Friday when it competes in the Houston Indoor Invitational and Multi Events at Yeoman Fieldhouse.

The meet begins Friday at noon for multi event athletes before resuming Saturday at 9 a.m. with the shot put and the first running event – the 5,000-meter run – scheduled for 11 a.m. The meet, which will include 20 schools including nine from the Southland Conference, will not be scored.

Joining Southeastern in the field will be host Houston along with Southland Conference rivals Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State (women), Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and UTSA. Also schools scheduled to compete are Houston Baptist, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Prairie View, Rice, Southern Miss, Texas, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Southern and UTPA.

Southeastern got off to an impressive start in its indoor season opener two weeks ago as it produced 13 top-five finishes at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational.

Senior Adonson Shallow, who has the best mark in the Southland Conference in the men's weight throw and the second-best mark in the shot put, will compete in both events for the Lions.

Henry Rop (5,000-meter run), Shannon Grover (200 meter/400 meter dash), Jerel Butler (200 meters/400 meters/4x400 relay), Michael Rheams (long jump/triple jump), Kovey Simmons (pole vault) and Phillippe Moore (long jump/triple jump) highlight a group on the men's side that will compete. Former Fontainebleau product Stephen Atkinson, who finished seventh in the decathlon at the 2010 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, will make his 2010-11 debut in the men's heptathlon.

On the women's side, Michelle Ogashi will compete in the long jump, triple jump and will take part in the 4x400-meter relay team. Ogashi, who is second among Southland Conference athletes in the triple jump, finished third overall at the LSU Purple Tiger with a mark of 39-0.50.

Colleen Butler and Brittany Pfantz are both scheduled to compete in the pole vault for Southeastern with Whitney Curry (1-mile run), Judith Schultheis (60-meter hurdles/4x400-meter relay) and freshman Nia Stewart (60 meters/long jump/triple jump) slated to compete.

Southeastern will get its first opportunity to compete in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash with the freshman tandem of Tess Mullings and Mandalyn Mitchell entered in each event. Mullings posted the fifth-best mark among Southland Conference athletes in the 60-meter hurdles (9.03).

After competing in Houston, Southeastern will return to action Feb. 4-5 with a pair of meets. Southeastern will compete in the McNeese State Indoor II on Feb. 4 before returning to the Lone Star State for the Houston All-Comers Meet on Feb. 5.
