Jones Earns Second Consecutive All-State Honors

BATON ROUGE, La. - Senior distance runner Lauren Jones earned all-state honors for the second consecutive season as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association announced its 2010 All-Louisiana cross country team on Sunday.

Jones becomes the first athlete in Nicholls history to be named to consecutive all-state cross country teams after backing up a breakthrough junior season in 2009 with a solid 2010 season.

Jones competed in all six fall races for the Colonels in 2010, turning in her best performance of the year at Alabama's Crimson Classic where she set a school record by covering a the 5K course in 18:03.70.

Jones finished under 19 minutes in all three 5K races.  The Centerville, Iowa native clocked in at 23:39.70 at the 6K Southland Conference Championships to help the Colonels to a sixth place finish, the best in school history.  Jones backed up that performance by leading the Colonels to a 13rd place finish at the 2010 South Central Regional Championship meet with a 6K time of 21:51.10.

Rounding out the team is Tulane's Rebecca Coady and Julia Whitrock, LSU's Laura Carleton, Southeastern Louisiana's Naomi Jeruto and McNeese State's Amy Guinn, Tinette Burger and Georgia Ball.

Burger earned runner of the year honors and Ball was named freshman of the year.  McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy was named coach of the year.
