Lions Claw for Conference Cross Country Crowns

LIVE RESULTS

BEAUMONT, Texas –
The Southeastern Louisiana men's and women's cross country teams compete in the Southland Conference Championships Thursday morning at Bayou Din Golf Club. Senior Henry Rop will be looking for his fourth straight individual victory and first league title.

Rop needed 19:39.24 to complete the four mile Choctaw Open in Clinton, Miss., two weeks ago. He was joined in the top 10 by freshman Joseph LeGrange in fourth place (21:24.71), senior Reese Lee in seventh (21:37.85), sophomore Scott Richardson in eighth (21:49.10) and freshman Paul Arthur in 10th (21:54.39). Rop also crossed the line first at the Azalea City Classic and LSU Invitational.

Looking back at recent Southland Conference Championships, the native of Kapsabet, Kenya, has a pair of top 10 finishes on his résumé. Rop closed out his sophomore campaign with a fourth place effort at the 2008 meet, then earned a ninth place position in 2009.

“If Henry has a great meet, he could be the conference champion,” head coach Sean Brady said. “He's prepared, physically and mentally. This is his last shot and it's a very meaningful competition for him. I know he'll show up and have a legitimate shot at taking home a title, which would be pretty special.”

Senior Naomi Jeruto will pace the Lady Lions in the hunt for a conference championship. She took ninth at the Choctaw Open 5K, covering the distance in 18:53.04. Senior Whitney Curry was the next best Southeastern finisher, placing 13th with a time of 19:16.63.

The women's 6K race begins at 9 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 9:45 a.m.
