McNeese\'s Darrick Brown wins long jump event at LSU.

BATON ROUGE – A first place performance along with a NCAA qualifying mark by Darrick Brown in the long jump highlighted McNeese State's efforts during the LSU outdoor track and field meet here Saturday. Brown went a NCAA championship qualifying distance of 24-4 1/4 in winning the event. He also went on to place third in the high jump with a leap of 6-6 3/4. The Cowboy sophomore was the only McNeese athlete to place first in any event at the three day meet. Several athletes, however, managed to finish in the top five in their respective events. Alan Foolkes ran a 14:58.56 clocking for a third place in the 5,000 meters while Andre Bertrand went a personal best 15-7 for a fourth place finish in the pole vault. Also, Kelly Gram ran a 1:02.85 for third place in the women's 400 meter hurdles and Victoria Simon tossed the javelin 147-10 for fourth in that event. Also taking a third place was Jon Fagan in the decathlon. Terry Lewis ran 55.80 for a 10th place in the men's 400 meter hurdles while Todd Bourgeois and Jimmie Heath tied for sixth in the pole vault at 15-1. Although they did not place in the top 10, other efforts for the Cowboys and Cowgirls had Phil Winfield running 3:59.69, Nicholas Kay running 3:59.89 and Barry Hill 4:02.82 in the 1500 meters; Kerry Gremillion going 48.84 in the 400 meters; Desiree Boxie 58.55, Mel Bailey 59.09, and Kamekia Ellis 59.99 in the 400 meters; Danielle Mitchell going 10-10 in the pole vault and the women's 4x400 relay team of Bailey, Boxie, Gram and Amesha Forward posting a 3:52.40. -30-
