Colonel Track Trio Lands All-State Honors

BATON ROUGE - Honors keep rolling in for the Nicholls State University women's track and field team, as junior distance runners Kadi Whisnant and Lauren Jones and senior javelin thrower Leslie Bourgeois finished among the top three in the state in their events to earn all-state honors on Saturday.

The Colonels were led by Whisnant and Jones, who had top three finishes in two events each.

Whisnant turned in the state's third-best 1500 m time by clocking in at 4:36.31, just over eight seconds off the top time in state. However, the Baton Rouge native took the state's top spot in her specialty, the 3,000 m steeplechase, clocking in with a school record time of 10:41.07 on April 24 at the Rice Twilight in Houston.

The St. Michael the Archangel High School product's time at the Rice Twilight was the third fastest time in the history of the Southland Conference and made her the top collegiate finisher. That day, Whisnant finished second only to professional Lennie Waite of Great Britain, owner of the season's second best steeple time in the world at that point.

Whisnant would go on to claim the Southland Conference steeplchase championship at the league's outdoor championship meet and qualify for the NCAA National Championship East Preliminary Meet.

Jones joined Whisnant by giving Nicholls two distance runners with a pair of all-state times. Jones, Nicholls long distance specialist, turned in the second best times in the state in both the 5,000 m and the 10,000 m, trailing only McNeese State's Amy Guinn in both events.

The Centerville, Iowa native turned in her first all-state performance on April 24 at the Rice Twilight. In what would prove to be a banner day for the Nicholls distance crew, Jones clocked in at 17:42.43 in the 5K to join Whisnant in setting a new school record that would be the second best time in the state on the year.

Jones followed that performance with another school record in the 10K at the Southland Conference Championships on May 14. The Centerville High School product's school record time of 36:34.22 would be the second best time in the state on the year and finish just seven seconds shy of All-Southland Conference honors.

Last but not least, senior javelin thrower Leslie Bourgeois continued her regional dominance of the women's javelin. In her final season in a Colonel uniform, Bourgeois turned in a season best throw of 48.30 (158 ft. 5 in.) at the NCAA East Prelims, and was on top of the state leader board all season long until Tulane's Ana Ruzevic delivered a 162 ft throw at the NCAA National Championship Finals.
