Southeastern's Roberts Claims ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Accolades

Two-time Southland Student-Athlete of the Year rewarded for work on and off the track

Cory Roberts is the 13th ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection in school history
HAMMOND – A day after being named the Southland Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, Southeastern Louisiana senior Cory Roberts was named to the 2010 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team in an announcement from the CoSIDA office on Tuesday.

Roberts, a native of Meraux that prepped at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond, is a third team selection and is the 13th student-athlete in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Southeastern is the only school in the Southland Conference to have multiple Academic All-America selections in the 2009-10 athletic year, as Lady Lion softball student-athlete Katie Duhe earned a second team spot last month. Roberts is the second track student-athlete in program history to earn Academic All-America honors, joining former Lady Lion Janice Ezegbunam (2004).

Roberts joins previous Southeastern Academic All-America honorees Steve Grigas (men's basketball, 1979), Mikael Jonsson (men's tennis, 1989), Haken Bennhage (men's tennis, 1990), Ola Fjellstrom (men's tennis, 1990 and 1991), Tara Maus (softball, 2008) Renata Smekalova (women's tennis, 1994), Ezegbunam, Brett Bergeron (men's golf, 2006), Nina Knavs (women's tennis, 2008), Vladimir Paunic (men's tennis, 2008), Brooke Lockhart (softball, 2008) and Duhe.

A biology major with a 3.84 grade point average, Roberts had his degree conferred last month and has been accepted to the LSU Medical School in New Orleans, La., where he will continue his study in medicine. Last month, the Southland Conference awarded Roberts the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship - the league's ultimate academic honor for its top graduating student-athletes. The award is presented annually to graduating male and female letterwinners with the highest cumulative grade-point averages during their enrollment at Southland Conference universities. The $2,500 scholarship must be applied to graduate study at an institution of the recipient's choice.

Roberts also had a successful season in competition. Posting the second-highest point total (7,923) in the event's history, Roberts repeated as Southland Conference outdoor champion in the decathlon and broke his own school record (7,451) set in 2009. At the 2010 championships in Arlington, he placed in the top three in seven of the 10 events with first-place marks in the 400 and 1,500-meter runs and the 110-meter hurdles. Roberts qualified for regional competition in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 35th at the East Regional last month in Greensboro, N.C.

Tuesday's honor is just the latest in a long line of academic accolades for Roberts, who was also named to the Academic All-Southland Conference team for the third straight season on Monday. Following the Lions' conference championship at the 2009 outdoor meet, Roberts was named the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for outdoor track and field. A first team Academic All-Southland Conference choice in 2008 and 2009, Roberts was also named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men's All-Academic Track and Field Team last season.

Roberts earned a spot on the team after being named to Academic All-District VI team for the second straight season. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average who has completed one full calendar year at his or her institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
