Roberts, Kapkiai, Sanchez Earn Conference All-Academic Honors

FRISCO, Texas  Southeastern Louisiana senior Cory Roberts has been crowned Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season, the league announced Monday. The cross country/track and field all-academic teams were named as well, featuring Roberts along with a pair of Lady Lions, junior Dorcas Kapkiai and sophomore Lacey Sanchez.

Earlier this month, Roberts was named to the 2010 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team for the second time, and is eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be released Tuesday. Previously, Roberts won the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the Southland Conference's ultimate academic honor for its top graduates. Having earned his bachelor's degree from Southeastern with a 3.84 grade point average while majoring in biology, he has been accepted to the LSU Medical School in New Orleans.

Roberts earned a repeat championship in decathlon at the Southland Conference championship meet in Arlington, Texas, tallying the second-highest point total (7,923) in the event's history, breaking his own school record in the process. He placed in the top three in seven of the 10 events with first-place marks in the 400 and 1,500-meter runs and the 110-meter hurdles. Roberts qualified for regional competition in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 35th at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C.

Roberts calls Meraux, La., home, but completed his high school career at St. Thomas Aquinas in Hammond, having relocated following Hurricane Katrina.

Kapkiai was Southeastern's top female runner in every meet she participated in during the cross country season. She also led the Lady Lions academically, carrying a 3.74 GPA as an accounting major. Kapkiai, who hails from Eldoret, Kenya, earned two individual victories, first besting an outstanding field at South Alabama's 5K meet, the Azalea City Classic. Her finest day of the season came at the Watson Ford 6K Invitational, hosted by Mississippi College, as her individual win was part of a Southeastern team victory. Then during the outdoor track and field season, she won the 5K run at South Alabama.

Sanchez won the Southland Conference outdoor pole vault title, topping her own school record as she cleared 13 feet, 1.5 inches (4 meters). She qualified for NCAA East Preliminary Round, where she finished 34th. Sanchez also racked up a pair of victories leading up to the league championship, winning at the Northwestern State Invitational and LSU Alumni Gold. During the indoor campaign, Sanchez set a school record at 12 feet 1.5 inches (3.7 meters), good for third place in the Southland meet.

The Baton Rouge native carries a 3.71 GPA majoring in English. In addition, Sanchez was crowned Miss Southeastern 2010, and she performs countless acts of community service as part of her reign. She'll compete in the Miss Louisiana pageant later this week in Monroe.
