EUGENE, Ore.
The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships ended Saturday with Southeastern Louisiana senior Adonson Shallow taking in 11th place in shot put. Still, he leaves historic Hayward Field as an All-American, earning the status Wednesday in discus.

Shallow registered a mark on the first of three shot attempts, heaving the implement 59 feet, 8.25 inches (18.19 meters). He proceeded to foot foul on his second attempt, and then have the ball slip from his hand on the third try. He was unable to break into the top nine, which would have allowed him three more throws.

“That first one was the third best throw he's had in his career,” head coach Sean Brady said. “We thought that would get him into the finals, but it just didn't happen that way. He's an All-American. I'm very proud of him as an athlete and a person for what he accomplished this year, and for the way he represented our team in the fashion that he did here at nationals.”

Arizona State senior Ryan Whiting won the shot put competition, thanks to a score of 72 feet, 1 inch (21.97 meters). Kansas freshman Mason Finley and Penn State junior Blake Eaton also earned spots on the medal stand.

Discus ended up being Shallow's best event of the week, as his effort of 185 feet, 3.45 inches (56.6 meters) put him in fourth place. Shallow also competed in hammer throw on Friday, but was unable to register a mark, fouling on all three attempts.

“I'm a bit disappointed in myself,” Shallow said. “I felt like I could have done more for the school. I'm still glad I could become an All-American in the discus. This meet was special. It'll be an experience I'm always going to remember.”

Team-wise, the five points Shallow earned Wednesday left Southeastern's one-man show in a tie for 45th place, alongside Baylor, Ole Miss, Memphis, Ohio State, Tennessee and Santa Barbara. Texas A&M captured the men's and women's championships.

Shallow ends his outdoor career at Southeastern as the school record holder in discus, hammer throw and shot put. While his outdoor eligibility is up, he will return for the 2011 indoor campaign.

Next for Shallow is international competition during the summer, starting with the 21st Central American and Caribbean Games, which will be held July 17-Aug. 1in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He will represent his native St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
