HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior thrower Adonson Shallow added to his list of individual honors on Thursday, when he was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Region Field Athlete of the Year in an announcement from the USTFCCCA.

A native of the Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Shallow was awarded the regional honor after qualifying for three events at next week's NCAA Championships. The Lion senior will compete in the discus, hammer throw and shot put at the national meet.

Shallow capped an outstanding performance at last month's East Regional in Greensboro, N.C. with a win in the discus competition. After fouling on his first attempt, Shallow took over first place on his second throw and never looked back, thanks to a throw marked at 182 feet, 6 inches (55.64 meters). He improved upon that with his third throw, which traveled 187 feet, 1 inch (57.02 meters).

He could not top that on his final three tries, but still stayed on top, as the closest competitor was nearly five feet behind Shallow's top mark. Central Michigan senior Greg Pilling was the runner-up at 182 feet, 3 inches (55.57 meters). Shallow's feat of qualifying for the national meet in discus, hammer throw and shot put was matched by only one other student-athlete.

Shallow was named the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year after last month's league championships. Shallow started with the hammer throw Friday night at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas. His second of six throws was his best, as the implement flew 205 feet, 9 inches (62.72 meters), leading to 10 points and a first place result. Teammate Faisal Muhammad finished in second place, with an effort of 193 feet (58.83 meters).

Shallow qualified for four events at the championships, and there was only one he was not able to conquer. He settled for fifth place in javelin, good for four more points towards the Lions' total, with a throw of 200 feet (60.97 meters).

Saturday, Shallow got back to the top of the podium, claiming a second gold, this time in dramatic fashion. With two attempts to go in shot put, he was in second place behind Stephen F. Austin's Jon Arthur. On his next to last try, Shallow moved into a tie for first at 58 feet, 9.5 inches (17.92 meters). Then, on his final throw, Shallow surpassed Arthur with a Southeastern school record throw of 60 feet, 3.75 inches (18.38 meters).

Shallow capped his weekend with a third individual championship Sunday. Nobody in the conference could come within 10 feet of Shallow's effort, as he won with a toss of 183 feet, 10 inches (56.03 meters). During the indoor season, Shallow was named the league's Indoor Outstanding Field Events Performers after winning the shot put and weight throw.

Shallow will compete in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 9-12, in Eugene, Ore.
