Southeastern's Roberts Earns ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Honors

Senior claims latest in long line of academic accolades

Senior Cory Roberts (Meraux, La.) was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI team for the second consecutive year
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior Cory Roberts was named to the 2010 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team in an announcement from the CoSIDA office on Thursday.

Roberts, a native of Meraux, is a first team selection and is making his second straight appearance on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team. As a first team selection, the St. Thomas Aquinas High School product will be eligible for inclusion on the Academic All-America team, which will be announced on June 22.

A biology major with a 3.84 grade point average, Roberts had his degree conferred last month and has been accepted to the LSU Medical School in New Orleans, La., where he will continue his study in medicine. Last month, the Southland Conference awarded Roberts the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship - the league's ultimate academic honor for its top graduates. The award is presented annually to graduating male and female letterwinners with the highest cumulative grade-point averages during their enrollment at Southland Conference universities. The $2,500 scholarship must be applied to graduate study at an institution of the recipient's choice.

Roberts also had a successful season in competition. Posting the second-highest point total (7,923) in the event's history, Roberts repeated as Southland Conference outdoor champion in the decathlon and broke his own school record (7,451) set in 2009. At the 2010 championships in Arlington, he placed in the top three in seven of the 10 events with first-place marks in the 400 and 1,500-meter runs and the 110-meter hurdles. Roberts qualified for regional competition in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 35th at the East Regional last month in Greensboro, N.C.

Thursday's honor is just the latest in a long line of academic accolades for Roberts. Following the Lions' conference championship at the 2009 outdoor meet, Roberts was named the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for outdoor track and field. A first team Academic All-Southland Conference choice in 2009, Roberts was also named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men's All-Academic Track and Field Team.

Roberts was the lone Louisiana student-athlete and one of two Southland student-athletes, along with Texas State's Dmitri Kabakov, to earn Academic All-District VI men's track honors. He is the fifth Southeastern representative on the 2009-10 Academic All-District teams, joining fellow first team selections Dana Mayer (women's soccer), Josh Cryer (baseball), Katie Duhe (softball) and Cedric Scotto (men's golf). Last month, Duhe became the 12th student-athlete in school history to earn ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors.

The University Division of District VI encompasses all of the Division I schools in the states of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average who has completed one full calendar year at his or her institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Roberts' noteworthy career ended at last month's East Regionals, but the season continues for his teammate Adonson Shallow. The Lion thrower will compete in next week's discus, hammer and shot put competitions at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The meet runs Wednesday through Saturday.
