GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Nicholls State University women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the 2010 NCAA East Region Preliminaries after the women's 3,000 m steeplechase on Saturday morning at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

One day after the steeplechase was postponed due to heavy thunderstorms in the Greensboro area, Nicholls junior distance runner Kadi Whisnant, the reigning Southland Conference steeplechase champion, took to the track.

Against the deepest field she's faced all season, Whisnant took 45th place in her first career NCAA postseason meet. Whisnant turned in her fourth-fastest time on the season with a showing of 11:19.24.

Whisnant was the third and final Nicholls athlete to compete on the weekend, following senior Leslie Bourgeois' and freshman Aja Scott's appearances in the javelin competition. The 2010 season marked the first time in school history that Nicholls qualified multiple student athletes for NCAA postseason competition.

"Kadi ran great for us all year, and this may have been the result of having run so hard all season long," head coach Scott Williamson said. "I'm still very pleased with the way Kadi and all our girls handled some adverse circumstances, and the way Kadi and Aja competed in their first NCAA postseason is really encouraging and should be something they can build on for next season."

The only Colonel student-athlete still in action is Bourgeois. The veteran javelin thrower claimed fourth at the East prelims to clinch a berth at the 2010 NCAA National Championship Finals at the University of Oregon June 9-12.

Bourgeois, who claimed fourth at the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional en route to a 22nd place finish at the 2009 national championship finals, becomes the first Colonel student athlete in any sport to compete in the national championship finals in consecutive years.
