GREENSBORO, N.C. – Southeastern Louisiana senior Adonson Shallow secured a spot in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, thanks to a fifth place finish in hammer throw at the East Preliminary Round at Irwin Belk Track, home of North Carolina A&T University. Already assured a spot at the national meet at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, Shallow still has two events remaining.
Shallow entered the meet ranked seventh in the region in hammer, and exceeded those expectations. His first of three opening round tosses traveled 207 feet, 2 inches (63.14 meters), putting him in eighth place and granting him three additional throws. Shallow unleashed his best effort on his fourth overall attempt, as the implement sailed 215 feet, 9 inches (65.76 meters), good for fifth place in the competition. The top 12 throwers advanced to the next step, and kept their hopes for a national title alive.
Friday, Shallow is scheduled to take part in shot put at 3 p.m. He is the first thrower in the fourth flight, and comes into the event seeded 11th in the region. Saturday, he'll compete in discus, entering as the region's top performer.
“Shallow is just awesome,” head coach Sean Brady said. “The pressure is off. Hammer was the only event we were really worried about. He'll go for the trifecta now with shot and discus coming up.”
Senior Faisal Muhammad finished 32nd in hammer throw, with his best mark coming on his first throw. The hammer's journey ended 184 feet, 2 inches (56.13 meters), from where it began.
On the track, senior Adlus Wiltz advanced to the 400 meter hurdles quarterfinals as the 32nd qualifier. His time of 52.23 seconds edged Bethune-Cookman's Eric Cray (52.27) for the final spot. Wiltz was fifth place in the fifth heat. With six heats, the top three move on, plus the next six best times. The quarterfinal round is at 7 p.m. Friday, and the top three racers from each of the three heats will go to Eugene, along with the next three best efforts.
Junior Shannon Grover was unable to advance in the 100 meter dash, taking 38th place with a time of 10.64 seconds, and suffering an injury in the process. He is scheduled to run in the 200 meter dash Friday, with the event set to begin at 7:30 p.m., but may not be able to participate. Grover is also part of the Lion 4x100 meter relay team. That event is Saturday.
On the women's side, freshman Chelsey Steele finished 36th and senior Yvette Schubert was 39th place in javelin. Steele's best mark came on her first of three attempts, going 130 feet, 6 inches (39.78 meters). Schubert fired the spear 120 feet, 11 inches (36.86 meters), on her final throw, while dealing with a nagging injury.
In addition to the aforementioned men's shot put and men's 200 meter dash, Friday's schedule also includes the women's pole vault, which begins at 4 p.m. Sophomore Lacey Sanchez will look to build on her school record and Southland Conference championship. Plus, senior Cory Roberts will try to extend his Southeastern career in the men's 110 meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m.
