STORIES:
DAY 1 | DAY 2 | DAY 3

ARLINGTON
, Texas Southeastern Louisiana used a one-two punch of Adonson Shallow and Faisal Muhammad to take an early lead at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UT Arlington's Maverick Stadium. At the end of a rain-soaked Friday, the Lions found themselves in third place. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions are in fourth place, just five points off the lead.

Weather delayed the meet for over three hours in the early afternoon, and when it resumed, hammer throw was the first men's event completed. Shallow scored 10 points by winning the individual title, doing it with a toss of 205 feet, 9 inches (62.72 meters). Muhammad stepped up late in the competition, as his next to last effort traveled 193 feet (58.83 meters), putting him in second, which earned Southeastern another eight points. That gave the Lions an 18-12 advantage on second place Stephen F. Austin following the initial event.

Shallow came back later to throw javelin, the final event of the day. He took fifth place honors, good for four points, with a heave of 200 feet (60.97 meters). The final throw came at 11:37 p.m. in front of a dedicated, but very tired, group of fans, coaches and student-athletes.

Prior to the storm's arrival, the men's decathlon kicked off with Southeastern's Cory Roberts putting together a strong start. He began with a second place finish in the 100 meter dash (10.96), and followed that with a third place effort in long jump at 22 feet, 8 inches (6.91 meters). After the delay, Roberts came in sixth in shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 4 inches (11.07 meters). He then settled for seventh in high jump before winning the 400 meter dash (49.01). That allowed him to finish day one in third place at 3675 points. Stephen F. Austin's Andrew Plentl leads at 3777 points, followed by Sam Houston State's Matthew Johnson with 3745.

McNeese State leads the men's championship race with 37 points, followed by SFA in second with 28 and Southeastern in third with 22.

Brady and Schubert
On the women's side, 2008 Southland Conference javelin champion Yvette Schubert suffered a heart-breaking conclusion to her final league meet. She was in second place, less than three feet behind the leader, but was forced to pass on her final attempt due to injury. Schubert's top throw was marked at 147 feet, 2 inches (44.86 meters). Her runner-up finish gave the Lady Lions eight points, while Chelsey Steele racked up an additional six points thanks to a third place result at 146 feet, 9 inches (44.74 meters).

Earlier, Renada Living earned five points by finishing the hammer throw in fourth place. Her best toss flew 161 feet, 8 inches (49.27 meters).

The Lady Jacks of SFA hold first place after opening day with 24 points, followed closely by McNeese and Nicholls (20) in a tie for second. Southeastern has 19 points, good for fourth place.

The meet resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with the 110 meter hurdles portion of the men's decathlon. In other action, field events get underway at 1 p.m. with men's long jump, while the first running event is the women's 1,500 meter run at 5 p.m.
