BATON ROUGE
Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Lacey Sanchez broke the school record in women's pole vault to win the event at LSU's Alumni Gold meet Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium. Her victory capped a day that also saw two other all-time marks fall.

Sanchez, a product of Baton Rouge's St. Michael the Archangel High School, cleared her first attempt at 12 feet, 11.75 inches (3.96 meters), to break the record set by Aquellah El-Amin in 2008. Teammate Brittany Pfantz joined Sanchez in the top five with a mark of 11 feet, 2.5 inches (3.42 meters).

We've been waiting on that (from Sanchez) for a couple of weeks,” head coach Sean Brady said. “I anticipate she's going to go even higher this year. The pole vault conditions weren't optimal. They were jumping into a head wind, so she had to work harder than if there was wind at her back.”

Shannon Grover, who entered the meet ranked 25th in the country in the men's 200 meter dash, had the best outing of his career. He completed his race in 20.79 seconds, setting the school record. The performance was good for fifth place and should move him several places up the national list once the weekend is complete.

“We knew he was ready to run fast and that he had good competition,” Brady said. “It was a shame he was in lane eight. That's a hard place to run, but he showed up and did well.”

In the women's 400 meter hurdles, Judith Schultheis registered the best time in Southeastern history at 1:01.64, topping the mark she set earlier this season on the same track. Schultheis completed the race in 1:01.69 at the LSU Relays on March 26.

Adonson Shallow continued to shine as one of the top all-around throwers in NCAA Division I. He started with discus, the lone men's event on Friday, and finished second, thanks to a throw of 181 feet, 3 inches (55.26 meters). Saturday, he returned with a second place effort in shot put at 57 feet, 5.5 inches (17.51 meters). Shallow's final event was the hammer throw. His best effort was 217 feet, 8 inches (66.36 meters), good for third place.

Michael Rheams placed well in a pair of events. His long jump of 23 feet, 6 inches (7.16 meters), put him in fourth place. Later, he had a triple jump of 50 feet, 4.75 inches (15.36 meters), good for third place.

After taking a week off, Southeastern has a pair of meets to end this month and start the next. The Lions and Lady Lions will go to the Louisiana-Lafayette Twilight on Thursday, April 29, followed by the Northwestern State Invitational on Saturday, May 1.
