Lions Return to Red Stick for Alumni Gold

Adonson Shallow leads the Lions into Baton Rouge Friday and Saturday

MEET SCHEDULE

HAMMOND
The Southeastern Louisiana men's and women's track and field teams visit Baton Rouge for the second time during the outdoor season this weekend for the LSU Alumni Gold meet. The Lions and Lady Lions are coming off a performance at the South Alabama Invitational that saw them combine to take 11 event titles and nine runner-up finishes.

The only events Friday are the men's and women's discus. Saturday brings a full day of action at Bernie Moore Stadium.

Southeastern senior Adonson Shallow enters the discus competition ranked ninth in the country. His top throw was registered during the team's last appearance in the capital city: 190 feet, 7 inches (58.1 meters), at the LSU Relays on March 26. That meet also saw Shallow's best effort of the year in hammer throw, good for seventh in the nation. Plus, he's 15th in the nation in shot put, thanks to his preeminent mark from that day. Shallow leads the Southland Conference in all three events.

Baton Rouge was also kind to Michael Rheams. His season-best distance in the triple jump, ranked 31st in NCAA Division I and second in the Southland, was achieved at the LSU Relays. He'll look to move up in the national standings by improving upon his score of 50 feet, 3.5 inches (15.33 meters).

Conference leader Adlus Wiltz is now ranked 25th nationally in the 400 meter hurdles following his performance in Mobile last weekend. His time of 51.54 seconds was the best among collegians, bested only by unattached athlete Patrick Lee (51.06).

The meet will feature teams from around the country, including Oklahoma, Illinois, Minnesota and South Florida, plus regional foes such as Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern and the home standing Tigers. Add to that a contingent of LSU graduates, counting a significant number of former Olympians.

“The competition is stellar,” head coach Sean Brady said. “The professionals that are there and the LSU alums make it outstanding. We look forward to seeing us improve this week. We're going to stick our athletes in their main events against some stiff opposition and see how they fare. We're expecting big times and marks.”

The Lady Lions boast a pair of conference leaders. Judith Schultheis is the Southland's best 400 meter hurdler, as her time of 1:01.69 from the LSU Relays has not been topped. Yvette Schubert ranks as the best javelin thrower in the SLC, having unleashed a heave of 147 feet, 11 inches (45.1 meters), at the Texas Relays on April 4.
