Southeastern Shines in Lone Star State

Shallow continued to show that he is one of the best throwers in NCAA Division I

RESULTS: Wednesday | ThursdayFriday | Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas
Competing alongside some of the nation's top student-athletes, Southeastern Louisiana's Adonson Shallow finished in fourth place in discus and ninth in hammer throw at the Texas Relays. Other special performances included Adlus Wiltz and Shannon Grover reaching the finals in their events, plus Yvette Schubert racking up a top 10 finish.

In discus, Shallow's best effort was marked at 188 feet, 3 inches (57.37 meters), less than three feet short of the event winner. Mason Finley of Kansas took first at 191 feet even (58.22 meters). He was followed by Brigham Young's Leif Arrhenius in second at 189 feet even (57.6 meters), and Texas Tech's Julian Wruck in third with a throw of 188 feet, 6 inches (57.46 meters).

Shallow only registered a single mark in the hammer throw, hurling the implement 206 feet, 4 inches (62.89 meters) on his first attempt. He proceeded to foul on his next five tries.

The men's 400 meter hurdles saw Wiltz complete the preliminary round with the eighth best time, 52.10, qualifying him for the finals. He wound up with a ninth place finish at 53.29.

Grover continued an impressive season, showing that he is one of the nation's top sprinters. His time of 10.48 in the men's 100 meter dash prelims was the eighth best, earning him a spot in the finals. Grover improved upon his time (10.44) and took seventh place.

The men's relay teams put together solid performances. The 4x100 squad of Malcolm Carter, Grover, Rocky Caruth and Jerel Butler finished in a season-best 41.1 seconds, placing them 13th. Southeastern's 4x400 team also had its best showing of the season. Butler, Grover, Brandon Camp and Wiltz only needed 3:13.43 to complete the race, good for 10th best in the prelims. The 4x400 athletes also entered in an invitational event, where they bettered their time by over two seconds (3:11.12), and took third.

Schubert shined in the women's javelin throw, hurling the spear 147 feet, 11 inches (45.10 meters), good for seventh place. The Walker product's best effort came on her third attempt.

“We came here and got better,” head coach Sean Brady said. “The people we will count on at the end of the year took a step in the right direction. The group all improved in the way they operate among the competition. It was a big meet for us and a huge learning experience.”

The biggest concern leaving Austin is the health of defending Southland Conference decathlon champion Cory Roberts, who suffered a knee injury during the high jump portion at Myers Stadium. The full extent of the damage will not be known until after he undergoes tests Monday.

Southeastern returns to action at the South Alabama Relays on Saturday, April 10.
