Southeastern's Schubert, Shallow Win Events at LSU Relays

BATON ROUGE  Southeastern senior Yvette Schubert won the women’s javelin competition and senior Adonson Shallow captured the hammer throw title Friday at the LSU Relays. Shallow followed that up with a win in the discus throw Saturday, plus a runner-up performance in shot put.

Schubert’s best effort was marked at 147 feet, 4 inches (44.9 meters), leading a Southeastern contingent that included three of the top four finishers. Lauren Whitehill of Akron claimed second place, followed by a pair of Lady Lions. Freshman Chelsey Steelecame in third with a throw of 135 feet, 4 inches (41.24 meters), while freshman Shalicia Rochon took fourth at 131 feet, 2 inches (39.97 meters).

Coming off a performance in Ruston that earned him the Southland Conference’s athlete of the week award, Shallow put together another amazing weekend. It started Friday night in hammer throw, as he broke his own school record yet again, this time with a heave of 220 feet (67.07 meters). Teammate Faisal Muhammad finished second, marked at 195 feet, 8 inches (59.63 meters).

Shallow returned Saturday to make the best discus throw in LSU Relays history. His winning lob of 190 feet, 7 inches (58.1 meters) topped one for 185 feet, 5 inches (56.52 meters) by Louisiana Tech’s Jason Morgan in 2007.

The weekend concluded for Shallow with a second place finish in shot put. Steve Hnat of Louisville won with a mark of 59 feet, 4.75 inches (18.1 meters), beating out Shallow’s 59 feet, 1.5 inch (18.02 meters) effort, which set another school record.

“Adonson solidified himself as the best all-around thrower in the country,” head coach Sean Brady said. “I can’t see another athlete out there that can do the things he does. He amazes me every week.”

In the men’s high jump, freshman Johnel Reams tied for second place overall and was tied for first place among collegians. The Walker native cleared 6 feet, 8 inches (2.03 meters), making him even with Louisville’s Neil Angermeier. Former Lion Babatunde Babalola, competing unattached, topped them with a leap of 7 feet, 0.5 inches (2.15 meters).

Other highlights for the Southeastern men included a third place performance by senior Cory Roberts in the 110 meter hurdles (14.29), third place for junior Michael Rheams in triple jump (50 feet, 3.5 inches / 15.33 meters) and a second place showing by the 4x100 meter relay team (41.54).

On the women’s side, further notable feats included a second place showing by junior Naomi Jeruto in the 5000 meter run (18:37.28) and a fifth place finish for junior Judith Schultheis in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.53). Her preliminary time of 1:01.69 set a school record.

Next on the schedule, several of Southeastern’s top performers will compete at the 83rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The meet runs from March 31-April 3 at Myers Stadium in Austin
