HAMMOND
– For the first time during the outdoor season, the Southeastern Louisiana men's and women's track and field teams head to Baton Rouge Friday and Saturday for the LSU Relays. In addition to the home standing Tigers, the Lions will face nationally ranked Louisville and Memphis, plus state rivals Grambling, Louisiana Tech and Southern.

Southeastern junior Shannon Grover comes in with the nation's second best time in the 200 meter dash. His race lasted 21.09 seconds at last Saturday's Jim Mize Invitational in Ruston, which trails only TCU's Mychal Dungey, who covered the distance in 20.92 during the Horned Frog Invitational last Friday.

“I'm very cautious and very optimistic,” head coach Sean Brady said. “Sometimes when you see an athlete run this fast so early in the season, they're either really good or they're peaking early. I don't see the latter in Shannon's case. He's just one of those really good guys. He should have an opportunity to reach the first round of the NCAA competition, and maybe the finals, if things line up the right way.”

Senior Adonson Shallow ranks second in the country in the hammer throw. He earned the Southland Conference's athlete of the week award after throwing the implement 217 feet, 7 inches (66.31 meters) at the Jim Mize Invitational. The only student-athlete with a better effort this season is Trey Henderson from Southern California, whose best toss was marked at 219 feet, 9 inches (66.97 meters).

“Things are lining up for this to be a great meet,” Brady said. “We're a balanced team with runners, jumpers and throwers, so it should be fun and exciting. It's a fantastic opportunity for us to get better.”

Senior Yvette Schubert will be in the meet's first event, women's javelin throw. She won the competition at last Saturday's Jim Mize Invitational in Ruston with a throw of 141 feet, 1 inch (43 meters). Brady believes Schubert is returning to the form that allowed her to win that event at the 2008 Southland Conference outdoor championships.

The meet begins on the field at 10:30 a.m. Friday, with track events following at 2:15 p.m. Action resumes Saturday with field competition at 9 a.m., and then student-athletes return to the track at 1 p.m.
