Southeastern's Shallow: Simply Outstanding

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior Adonson Shallow is the 2010 Southland Conference men's outstanding indoor field performer, the league office announced Wednesday.

Shallow won the men's weight throw for the second consecutive season, improving his throw from a season ago with a heave of 68-feet-11 ¾-inches (21.02m). The mark was a meet record and a provisional mark for the NCAA championships, March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark. Shallow threw 65-2 ¼ last year. A day later, Shallow pulled off the double with a first-place effort in the shot put. His toss of 60-2 (18.34m) was also a provisional mark.

UTSA senior Teddy Williams and UT Arlington senior Jasmine Walls have been named the Southland Conference indoor track and field athletes of the year.

Williams won his second consecutive athlete of the year honor while winning his third consecutive indoor title in the 60-meter dash. He was clocked at 6.66 seconds, edging UT Arlington junior Cordero Gray (6.72) and Texas State junior Aaron Jones (6.75). Williams' winning time was just two one-hundredths of a second slower than his time last season, which is the meet record. Williams also repeated as champion in the 200 meters in what was the closest race of the meet. Williams' time of 21.725 was just one one-thousandth better than Southeastern junior Shannon Grover (21.726). Stephen F. Austin sophomore Nick McCloud finished third (21.84).

Walls defended her titles in the women's 60 meters and 200 meters. In the 60, she crossed the finish line just three one-hundredths faster than Northwestern State senior Anna Forest and just a tenth of a second faster than Nicholls sophomore Samantha Calhoun. Walls was clocked at 7.56, which was just faster than her winning time of 7.62 last season. In the 200, her time of 24.61 was also just three one-hundredths faster than the runner up, senior teammate Antonia Hopkins (24.64). She was also tied for women's high point scorer of the meet.

The two athletes of the year were also named the conference's outstanding runners for their performances in the 60 meters and 200 meters.

The men's freshman of the year is UTSA's Keith Benford, who became the third different Roadrunner to win the men's high jump in the last three seasons. He cleared 6-10 ¾ (2.10m), topping UT Arlington's Adolphus Jones and teammate Devon Bond for the win.

UTSA's Bond was named the men's newcomer of the year. He won the triple jump with a leap of 52-1 ¾ (15.89). He became the first Roadrunner to win the event at the indoor championships.

Jones won the high jump and 1,000-meter run and finished third in the long jump and shot put. He scored 5,475 points to finish ahead of Southeastern senior Cory Roberts (5,226) and Sam Houston State junior Matthew Johnson (5,146). Jones' was just eight points off the meet record.

Earning coach of the year honors were UTSA men's coach Aaron Fox and Stephen F. Austin women's coach Phil Olson. Fox wins his fifth consecutive coach of the year award for leading the Roadrunners to their fifth consecutive league title. Olson is a four-time winner having also won the award in 2005, 2006 and 2009.
