Shallow Shatters Conference Record, Lions in Third Place

Shallow rewrote the Southeastern Louisiana and Southland Conference record books Friday
NORMAN, Okla. – Southeastern Louisiana junior Adonson Shallow destroyed his own school and conference record to win the weight throw competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. His effort helped the Lions end opening day in third place.

Shallow put up a mark of 68 feet 11.75 inches (21.02 meters) on his second throw of the day, beating his previous best of 65 feet 10.25 inches (20.07 meters), set at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational on Jan. 22, 2010. Shallow also won last year's conference weight throw event, which helped him capture the SLC Newcomer of the Year award.

Senior Faisal Muhammad completed Southeastern's one-two punch in weight throw. His toss of 62 feet 6 inches (19.05 meters) was good for second place and eight points. Combined with Shallow's 10 points for first, this was easily the biggest event of the day for the Lions.

Not only did Adonson and Faisal go out and get big points, which we needed, but I believe Adonson will move into the top 10 in the country in the weight throw,” head coach Sean Brady said. “We'll see how that plays out once all of the conferences get done with their meets.”

Senior Cory Roberts had one of the best, and most interesting, days of any Southland Conference athlete. Immediately after completing his heptathlon proceedings, he literally ran over to pole vault. In the middle of that event, he had to put down his pole, change shoes and run over to the 60 meter hurdles starting line. He proceeded to qualify for the 60 meter hurdles finals, and then return to pole vault, where he took third place.

UTSA's men occupy first place with 47.5 points through Friday. UT Arlington is in second with 37 followed by Southeastern in third with 28. Sam Houston State (27.5) and Stephen F. Austin (25.5) close out the top five.

On the women's side, Southeastern has yet to score a point. The Lady Lions' biggest highlight of the day came when junior Judith Schultheis put up the fourth best time (8.75) in the 60 meter hurdles prelims. Stephen F. Austin has a commanding lead in the championship chase.

Competition resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Mosier Indoor Facility. Live results are available at LionSports.net.
