Shamocus Patton Memorial Relays Interviews
The 2025 Louisiana high school track and field season began in earnest on Thursday across the state. In the Northwest section of the state, teams travelled to Benton to compete in the Shamocus Patton Memorial Relays. Ruston came away with the sweep as the fast Bearcats took the hardware to it's new home in Lincoln Parish.
Ruston's boys were led by D'joryen Jenkins, who won the 100m (11.06), 200m (22.40), and anchored the winning 4x100m (42.80).
The Bearcats also picked up wins from Joshua Brantley (173-6) in the javelin, Preston Parker (10:34) in the 3200m, and Jacob Miller in the long jump (21-7).
Besides the 4x100m, Ruston also won the 4x200m (1:29) and 4x400m (3:26).
Ruston's girls were led T'avion Clark, who--like Jenkins--won the 200m (25.14) and anchored the winning 4x100m (49.05).
Other Bearcats coming away with the season-opening victories include Parker Nations (5:34) in the 1600m, Hallie Hebert (11:59) in the 3200m, Taniyah Johnson (16-4) in the long jump, and freshman Maggie Rogers (100-8.5) in the javelin.
Benton's Miller Malley opened his season by jumping a personal record 15-6 in the pole vault. That breaks his own school record of 14-11.5 which he jumped in winning the LHSAA Class 5A State Championship last May.
Besides Jenkins, two other athletes were double winners. Parkway's Devon Oliver won both the discus (159-1) and the shot put (47-5). North DeSoto's Javonte Taylor won the high jump (6-6) and triple jump (44-6).
After missing the indoor season due to injury, Parkway's Brennan Robin made his return to the track. Robin won the elite 3200m with a time of 9:35.
Earlier this month, the Benton Track & Field Facebook page posted a picture of their first-class record board, which is in the hallway of the athletic complex. In the post, it said "which record will be the first one to fall in 2025?" It didn't take long to find out as the Tigers' girls 4x800 of Dominique Coore, Aaliyah Gonzales, Claire Allen, and Kyla Daux won with a 10:05.
