Shallow is Southland Athlete of the Week Winner

FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State junior Trecey Rew has been named the Southland Conference women's track and field athlete of the week, while Southeastern Louisiana senior Adonson Shallow has been named the conference's men's track and field athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Rew, from Garland, Texas (Garland High School), set school records in both shot put and weight throw at the Houston Indoor Invitational. Her throw of 51-feet, 5-inches improved her league-best NCAA provisional qualifying status in the shot put by 4 3/4 inches. Her weight throw of 57-8 1/2 moved her into the No. 2 spot in the conference standings. This is Rew's second athlete of the week honor this season.

Shallow, from Kingston, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, broke his own school record to win the shot put competition at the Houston Indoor Invitational. Shallow's shot put effort of 57-2 1/4 beat out his toss of 55-11 3/4 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational earlier this season. Shallow followed his record-breaking performance with a third-place finish in weight throw at 61-10 1/2.

Honorable mention for this week's women's award goes to Lamar junior Joyce Cheruiyot and UTSA senior Dana Mecke. For the men's award, honorable mention goes to Northwestern State senior Michael Green, Stephen F. Austin sophomore Nick McCloud and Texas State junior Ben Marvin. A student-athlete must receive 25-percent of the votes from the league's SIDs in order to qualify for honorable mention.

Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
