Shallow Shatters Records at Purple Tiger

BATON ROUGE  Southeastern Louisiana senior Adonson Shallow set school records in weight throw and shot put at LSU’s Purple Tiger Invitational Friday at Carl Maddox Field House. His performances were the Lions’ biggest highlights of the meet, which was not scored.

Shallow’s winning shot put effort of 17.06 meters surpassed Teremine White’s standard of 17.03 meters from 2008. Shallow’s weight throw of 20.07 meters broke the record he set last year (19.87 meters), but was not the best in the meet. He finished in second place, trailing LSU’s Walter Henning (21.76 meters).

“It was an outstanding performance on Adonson’s part,” head coach Sean Brady said. “He is living up to the billing. He’s got a lot on his shoulders, but he’s a big guy and willing to carry that weight. Two school records are great, but I think there’s still a lot more in the tank for Adonson.”

Faisal Muhammed joined Shallow near the top of the standings for weight throw, coming in fifth place at 18.62 meters. Kalphys Kemboi offered the only other top five individual finish for the Lion men, coming in fourth place in the 3000 meter run at a time of 9:10.94.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay team also fared well, coming in third place. The foursome of Jerel Butler, Shannon Grover, Andon Mitchell and Adlus Wiltz finished in 3:20.11.

On the women’s side, Southeastern placed two student-athletes in the top five in the pole vault competition. Lacey Sanchez took fourth place with a mark of 3.50 meters. Brittany Phantz also cleared 3.50 meters, but was awarded fifth place due to more misses overall.

Michelle Ogashi finished fifth in the triple jump competition, flying 11.70 meters.

“We are still in our training mode,” Brady said. “We had some younger student-athletes who were a little bit intimidated with the level of competition, so I’m glad we had this meet early in the year. It was a chance to see some people that are the best in the country at their events.”

Southeastern travels to the Houston Indoor Opener next weekend. The meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
