Southeastern Cross Country in Corpus for Conference Championships

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's and men's cross country teams are set to take part in the Southland Conference championships Saturday at Guth Park. The men's 8K meet begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the women's 6K at 9:15 a.m. Live results will be available via www.southland.org.

In their last competition on Oct. 10, the Lady Lions won the Watson Ford Invitational in Clinton, Miss. Individually, Southeastern's Dorcus Kapkiai won by clocking a time of 23:18.54 in the 6K event. It was the sophomore's second victory of the season, having previously taken top honors at the Azalea City Classic in Mobile, Ala., on Sept. 19.

The Watson Ford Invitational saw the Southeastern men's team finish in second behind Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Lion junior Henry Rop was the first place individual, completing the 8K event in 25:37.73.

Southeastern will be facing a very strong field in this weekend's meet. The Southland Conference boasts five of the top 15 women's teams and six of the top 15 men's squads in the south central region. SLU will have to break into the top 15 to qualify for NCAA regional competition.

Last season, the Southeastern women's team advanced to regionals by claiming the 15th and final spot.

“We've got some very strong runners,” head coach Sean Brady said. “The men's team is in better position than a year ago. On the women's side, we may lack the one-two punch from last year, but we have some more experience in the three-four-five spots.”

The NCAA south central regional meet is Nov. 13 in Waco, Texas. Regardless of whether or not the Southeastern teams qualify, several individuals will compete, including Kapkiai, Rop and Kalphys Kemboi.
