LHSAA Boys State Meet Preview

Boys 4A

The 4A state championship is a competition shared between Carencro and Westgate High School. These two schools will be competing against each other from district to regionals to state, which is bound to create some interesting races to follow as it leads to the championship. Both teams count on points from the sprints which will cause some change-ups in team scores as these teams progress through regionals.

Carencro finds itself predominantly relying on its sprints and relays to snag a team title. The sprints are led by Johnathan Green and Kendrell Williams.  Green leads the charge for Carencro in the 100m and 200m and Williams follows in the 400m; both have top times in the in 4A for the 200m and 400m respectively. Bryce Campbell remains Carencro's sole hope for nabbing points at state; he qualifies to regionals in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. Also, Malik Green shows great promise in the shot put with the #2 marked distance in 4A. Bailey Despaine has an opportunity to gain some much-needed points in the long jump as his best mark is only half of an inch from the two athletes ranked ahead of him. Finally, Carencro qualifies their 4x200m, which is currently ranked #1 in 4A, their 4x400m, and 4x800m.

Westgate High School is strong in the sprints and relays but finds itself with the potential to score key points in distance events as well. Tray'quan Francis has led the way for the distance squad in the 800m and 1600m. He is currently ranked #2 and #6 in both events in that order. Right behind Francis in the 800m is Christian Francisco. Francisco holds the #3 ranked time in the 800m and could pull off a large yield in points at the state meet if paired well with Francis. Francisco is also ranked #2 in 4A for the 400m. Cameron Spencer accompanies Francisco by running the 200m and is separated from Carencro's Johnathan Green in the 200m by only 0.01 seconds. Spencer is also ranked #2 in 4A in the 110m hurdles. In addition to a strong sprint, relay, and distance squad, Westgate qualifies Jordan Doucet who ranks #2 in 4A in the long jump. Finally, Westgate qualifies all of their relays for regionals which could be a major point gain and put them ahead of Carencro.
