SAN TAN VALLEY, ARIZONA -- The much anticipated sprint matchup between Fairview's (CO) Gavin Schurr and Tahoma's (WA) Anthony Smith didn't disappoint at the Desert Dream Last Hurrah Invitational on Friday.
In both races, the talented duo -- who met on the USATF circuit a year ago -- went toe-to-toe across both distances, the winner only being decided in the final meters.
But in the end, both athletes would leave the night happy, as both logged quality performances that would go down as their official PRs. .
In both cases, it was Schurr who would eventually take victory over Smith, scoring two wind-legal marks of 10.56 (+0.6) seconds and 21.47 (+0.2), though Smith challenged the Colorado sprinter in each contest, his acceleration being his biggest strength.
Smith scored times of 10.62 and 21.62, respectively.
Schurr's best moments, however, were also an indicator of a much-developing strength, with his top end speed surpassing Smith's final meters.
In the 200 meter race above, Smith ran the curve extremely well, taking the lead past the turn. But that deficit wouldn't be enough for Schurr to overcome. The final 50 meters saw the Fairview junior blow past his competitor.
