Lions, Lady Lions finish strong at LSU Alumni Gold

 BATON ROUGE - The Southeastern Louisiana University track teams posted another trio of NCAA Mideast Regional performances and the Lions and Lady Lions finished strong as the LSU Alumni Gold came to a conclusion on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

"This was a really good meet for us," head coach Sean Brady said.  "We lined up against some of the best teams in the country and our kids answered the bell.  They performed well against some top level competition and even beat them in some events.  Right now, we're relatively healthy and we're getting stronger each time out.  This bodes well for our goal to peak at the conference championships."

The Lion and Lady Lion sprinters led the charge on Saturday.  Freshman Shannon Grover shined in the men's 100 m dash.  The East Jefferson High School product posted his second NCAA Regional qualifying time of the season by posting a time of 10.53 in the 100.

Junior Adlus Wiltz came in uder the regional time in the 400 m hurdles for the second time this season, taking third place with a time of 51.76.  Meanwhile, sophomore Jerel Butler turned heads with a victory in the 400 m dash with a time of 47.69 that missed the qualfying mark by just 0.49 seconds.

The Lady Lion relay squads turned in their best performances of the season on Saturday.  Southeastern took tenth in the 4x100 m relay with a season best time of 47.00.  Later in the day, the women's 4x400 team broke four minutes for the first time this year with a time of 3:58.96.

One day after the Lion hammer throwers opened the LSU Alumni Gold by placing three in the top ten of the men's hammer throw, the Southeastern throwers continued to impressed on Saturday.

Junior thrower Adonson Shallow, who took second in the hammer with a school record throw on Friday, claimed first place in the shot put on Saturday.  Shallow's throw of 57 ft. 10.5 in. (17.64 m) surpassed the regional qualifying mark for the second time this season.

Junior decathlete Cory Roberts showed progress in his quest to become a threat to score in multiple open events at the conference meet by turning heads in his season debut in the javelin.  Roberts narrowly missed out on the top ten with a throw of 194 ft. 2 in. (59.19 m) that ranks fourth in the conference.

On the women's side, defending SLC champion Yvette Schubertnarrowly missed an NCAA Regional mark with a throw of 132 ft. 4 in. (40.35 m) in the javelin.  Schubert was followed by freshmanPetra Poznic, who threw 123 ft. 1 in. (40.35 m), and redshirt freshman Christian Bowers, who recorded a toss of 115 ft. 3 in. (35.1
4 m).

The Lions and Lady Lions will return to action next weekend in their final meet prior to the SLC Outdoor Championships.  Southeastern will head to Northwestern State for the NSU Relays next weekend.
