Malia Cali records 3rd fastest US 3k for 2009 at Carl Lewis Invitational

The St. Thomas Aquinas High School girls and boys track and field teams posted some great performances in Saturday's Carl Lewis Invitational held at the University of Houston Indoor Track and Field Facility.  STA's Malia Cali set a new meet record in winning the 3000 meters in (9:59.07), which was the #3 best 3000 mark in the nation.  Jordyn Becerra posted a fifth place finish in the 3000 (11:30.31), while Randy Wills was 13th in the boys 3000 (9:53.87) and Corbett Ourso 24th (10:21.48).  The STA girls Distance Medley Relay team of : Cali, Becerra, Emily McAfee and Michelle Mobley posted a first place finish  in (13:06.28). 
             The STA boys field athletes posted some good efforts, Junior Brandon Robertson placed 12th in the long jump (21-1), while Sophomore Zaveral Jackson was seventh in the high jump (5-10) and Senior Sean Johnson was eighth (5-10).  Senior Trey DiCristina placed 11th in the shot put (45-2).
            The STA girls distance runners also posted some good efforts in their open events.  Carmen Brothers won her heet of the 800 meters (2:35.24), which was good enough for an 18th place finish, while Emily McAfee finished 27th (2:40.78).  Elizabeth Gambel was 13th in the 1 mile (6:01.05), followed by Michelle Mobley (22nd- 6:31.15) and Katie Durham (23rd-6:47.13).
            The STA sprinters opened up the season, with Kyla Shelby placeing 140th in the 200 (29.98) and Emily Phares was 163rd (31.55).  Dani Rossano posted  a 53rd place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (11.40).  STA will compete in the LSU High School Qualifier in Baton Rouge this weekend.
