Breaux Named Freshman of the Year

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Alex Breaux finished in seventh place, earning all-conference honors, and was named the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Freshman of the Year here Saturday at Kereiakes Park as Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns competed in the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships.

Breaux traversed the 8K course in 25:42.45. He was six seconds away from a Top 5 finish. The Houma native collected his third Top 10 finish of the season and recorded his season-best time in the 8K.

Breaux became the first UL runner to earn All-Sun Belt accolades since the 2004 season (Justin Lemaire, Jake Simmons, Walter Whitfield).

On the women’s side Paula Parker turned in a 16th place finish to pace the Cajuns. Parker completed the 5K course in 19:39.44 and was 34 seconds away from an all-conference performance.

The UL men finished 10th out of 11 teams with 222 points. The UL women took home ninth place out of 11 teams with 214 points.

Other runners counting toward the men’s team total were Reese Lee (41st – 27:57.77), Joby Gisclair (55th – 28:44.77), Stuart Theriot (61st – 29:19.87) and Marshall Kemp (64th – 29:36.42).

Each of the Cajuns’ women recorded a faster 5K time than the team’s only other 5K meet – ULM Warhawk Invitational. Ashley Faulk finished 34th with a time of 20:22.44 and Torri Choate came in 45th in 21:08.04 to join Parker in headlining the women’s performance.

For most of the Louisiana runners it marks the end of the 2008 season. Selected runners on both sides will compete in the NCAA Regionals in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, Nov. 15.
