Men's XC Wins Festival; Women's Fifth

BATON ROUGE -- A fifth-place finish by junior Andy Florek highlighted the LSU cross country team’s efforts at their Tiger Festival on Saturday as the men placed first and the women were fifth overall.

The Tigers’ five scores all finished among the field’s top 25 as they tallied 54 points, capturing the team title. Louisiana Tech (56) and McNesse State (70) finished second and third, respectively.

“We have a pretty good team on the men’s side,” said LSU head coach Mark Elliot. “Each week they get better and better. It’s only two meets in, but I’m pleased with what I saw.”

On the women’s side Houston captured the title with 32 points. Tulane followed with 61 points, while Southeastern Louisiana rounded out the top three with 73 points. The Lady Tiger’s took fifth place with 119 points.

“Compared to last week there was better effort for the women,” said Elliot. “I think the women ran as best they could considering our top runner was not feeling well.”

Just behind Florek were teammates Richard Chantin (25:31.8) and Jacob Simmons (25:38.2), finishing sixth and seventh place. Cullen Doody (27:08.4) and Sean Swanner (27:19.4) rounded out the scoring for the pack.

For the Lady Tigers, freshman Laura Carleton paced the squad with an 18th place finish and a time of 24:13.7 over the 6K course. Following Carleton across the finish line were Jenna Hensseler (24:47.6), Amber Abbott (25:42.3) and Jessica Deutsch (26:58.6).

LSU’s cross country team returns to action October 18 when the Tigers travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Chili Pepper Invitational.
