Grambling returns to the track this weekend with a trip to Baton Rouge for the annual Pelican Relays on the campus of Southern.

The Grambling State outdoor men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Austin, Texas this past weekend to participate in the annual Texas Relays on the campus of The University of Texas.
Both teams put forth a valiant effort in a competitive meet which fielded some of the top runners in the country.  Head track coach Bertram Lovell said he was pleased with his team’s results despite the obstacles that were in front of them.
“I felt good after watching my teams this weekend,” he said.  “While I’m not accustomed to finishing like we did last weekend, I realized that the team is young and they’re still trying to put everything together.”
Lovell mentioned he was satisfied with the performance of his distance medley teams.  The men’s team finished eighth with a run of 3:27.82 while the women completed the race in ninth after clocking a 4:02.65.
“We had a chance to finish higher in both events as we led throughout the first few laps,” he said.  “But overall, I was fine with where we placed.”
Lovell also said his teams were faced with less-than-ideal conditions to open the meet.
“It was cold on Friday morning and I think that played a small factor in our performance in the prelims,” he said.

“We’re going to do fine there,” Lovell said.  “We’re getting better each and every week, rounding into shape and by the time the SWAC meet approaches, you’ll see a different team.”
