Ragin' Cajuns Step Up At A-State Scarlet And Black

Lyons earns pair of top finishes; Cormier claims 55-hurdles

JONESBORO, Ark. – Kelci Lyons recorded a pair of first-place finishes and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team recorded a solid performance at the A-State Scarlet and Black Invitational on Saturday at the ASU Convocation Center.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns posted six first-place finishes overall in the meet that was hosted by Arkansas State and included Sun Belt Conference foe UALR, Ole Miss, Grambling, Murray State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Harding and Arkansas Baptist.
 
"I felt like we took some steps forward today on the track, especially in the hurdles," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "We have a pretty special group there. We still have a lot of work to do, but overall we did well today."
 
Lyons, who was named the Sun Belt Conference co-Female Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, led Louisiana to a 1-2 finish in the women's 800-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 2:15.43 and edging teammate Danielle Castaldi (2:17.48). The junior came back at the end of the day and ran the opening leg of the Ragin' Cajuns distance medley relay team that included Kaitlyn Moreau, Castaldi and Ashley Irwin and claimed first-place honors in 12:26.51.
 
The Cajuns got a 1-2 finish in the men's 55-meter hurdles as Morgan Cormier (7.51) edged freshman Tyler Hughes (7.55) to claim top honors. The Ragin' Cajuns added two more first-place performances on the men's side as Matt Rice claimed the 800-meters (1:54.76) and Sean Bezdek the 5,000-meter run (15:41.02).
 
In the women's high jump, Lindsey Harmon earned the individual crown with a mark of 5 feet, 5 inches and the Ragin' Cajuns posted a 1-2-3 finish and claimed five of the top six spots in the event. Alexandra Harrell (5-5) and Jasmin Fusilier (5-3) finished second and third, respectively for Louisiana with Madalyn Trisler (5-3) finishing fifth and Moreau (5-1) sixth.
 
Dionte Heath (men's high jump, 6-8 ¼), Hanoj Carter (200-meters, 21.63), Bryce Robinson (5,000-meters, 15:59.41) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team (3:19.90) all earned second-place finishes on the men's side. William LeBlanc (high jump, 6-7) and Logan Pearce (5,000-meters, 16:15.61) earned third-place performances, Beau Robinson (3,000-meters, 8:47.39) and Dylan Heck (5,000-meters, 16:35.00) were fourth and Trey Bonin (5,000-meters, 16:35.01) fifth.
 
Irwin (10:22.26) and Claire Hodges (10:31.50) finished third and fourth overall in the women's 3,000-meter run, Stacy Imagbe finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.51), Moreau added a fourth-place finish in the women's 55-meter hurdles (8.38) with Fusilier placing fifth (8.52).
 
Louisiana will return to action on Friday when it travels to Lake Charles to compete in the Jeff Davis Invitational. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
