Privateers Complete Final Tune-Up for Southland Championships

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers track and field team got a huge run from Darius Roy as part of the Golden Eagle Classic at the Marshall Bell Track and Field Complex on Saturday. It was the final tune-up event for the Privateers before the Southland Championships in two weeks.

Darius Roy blazed through the 200-meter with a personal record of 20.99, and finished first among collegiate competitors while placing second overall. Roy's time improved by a quarter of a second over his previous best, and is now ranked second in the 200 in the Southland. "Darius ran real well in the 200. It definitely puts him in position to perform very well in conference championships in two weeks," said Head Coach Mike Erb.

The Privateers also got a couple of personal bests to highlight the day. Cal Wood recorded a personal best in the long jump at 20'7 ¼". Also, Margot Grozier claimed a personal record in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 124'10." In the women's javelin, Elena Villar landed just shy of her season-best with a throw of 113'6".

New Orleans got individual victories from Alexia Fortenberry in the women's 100-meter hurdles, Constant Pretorius in the men's 400-meter hurdles, and a 1-2 finish from Edmund Pine and Michael Batson in the men's 800-meter.

With two weeks to prepare, the Privateers will next participate in the Southland Championships in Conway, Ark. on May 9.
