Warhawks Record Trio of First-Place Finishes at KMS Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Juniors Teona Glave and Hillary Kirwa and sophomore Dusan Makevic each took first-place in their respective events to propel the ULM track & field team at the KMS Invitational on Thursday, hosted by Southern Miss at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Glave, who holds the ULM school record in the women’s 800m, won the event with a 2:18.11 showing. Her time currently stands as a top-5 mark in the Sun Belt Conference this season. Teammate Brittany Garrison, a freshman, also finished top-5 in the race with a personal-best time of 2:25.93.

In the men’s mile, Makevic clocked in first at a 4:14.64 pace, a personal-record that topped his 4:18.40 mark from last season. The 4:14.64 is top-5 in the league this season. Freshman Vinnie Van Puyvelde also set a personal-record with his third-place time of 4:17.95, eighth in the SBC.

The Warhawks continued to shine in distance running as junior Hillary Kirwa won the men’s 3000m with an 8:41.55 score. He was one of three Warhawks to finish in the top-6 as junior Silah Chumba finished fourth at 9:08.96 and Jonathan Jeffcoat crossed the line at 9:22.99.

Senior Celeste Rumphs tallied a personal-record of 5.93m in the women’s long jump with a third-place showing. It crushed her previous best of 5.63m set in 2011 and is the longest jump of anyone in the conference this season.

On the men’s side, sophomore Corey Wesley took third in the long jump after landing at 7.03m, a personal indoor record. It’s also a top-5 mark in the conference this season. Wesley also took top-5 in the triple jump with a 14.11m leap.

In sprints, sophomore Nigel Cribbs came in fourth with a 22.19 time which puts him top-10 in the SBC this season. Senior Martin Solomon qualified for the finals of the 60m hurdles and finished sixth in 8.32.

The men’s shot put was highlighted by a pair of top-10 finishes. Freshman Alton Clay registered a 12.99m toss while freshman Jevaughn Shaw had a 12.35m landing.

ULM finished the meet strong with a second-place time of 3:17.80 in the men’s 4x400m relay. It neared the school record of 3:17.22 set in 2008.

The Warhawks will head back to Birmingham, Ala., next weekend as they take part in the Vulcan Invite on Feb. 7-8.
