Lions Come Up Big in Arkansas

JONESBORO, Ark. – Five first-place finishes and multiple personal bests paced the Southeastern men's and women's track and field teams at the A-State Invitational, hosted by Arkansas State.

"It was another good showing for the Lions, against solid teams from different conferences," said head coach Sean Brady.

Both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams placed first in their respective events. Alicia Noel, Bayleigh Butler, Domonique White, and Vanessa Williamsposted a time of 4:02.25; while the men's team, made up of T.J. HerbertBrandon DanielsAbram Taylor, and Brian Verdin, recorded a time of 3:23.18.

Nia Stewart claimed the top spot in the women's long jump for the second week in a row, while Emanuel Kennedy (22-10.50) also placed first in the men's event. Stewart jumped for 18 feet, five inches and also placed tenth in the women's 200-meter dash (26.01). Kennedy placed third in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.20 seconds.

Another first-place finish came from Misha Frazier in the women's shot put. The reigning 2013 Louisiana Female Freshman of the Year set a lifetime best (46-02.00) and was just inches shy of the school record (46-06.66).

Brianna Golden set a personal best in the women's weight throw (2nd place, 39-03.25); finishing just ahead of Frazier, who placed third (56-08.50).

The men's group of throwers recorded one of the best cohesive performances in school history.

"We had four guys throw over fifty feet in the shot put," said Brady. "That's a first for us."

Jeffrey Milliron (57-04.25) set a lifetime best, finishing second. Jonathan Kinchen (51-10.00), Brett Olsen (51-06.25), and Jimmy LeBlanc (50-06.00), placed 5th, 7th, and 8th, respectively.

The weight throw also proved to be a successful event for the men's group of throwers, with all four members finishing in the top ten. Olsen came in second place (65-04.25) and also set a lifetime best. Milliron finished third and set yet another lifetime best in the weight throw (64-00.50).

"Many personal bests were set today," Brady said. "It's seems an unusual amount for the first two weeks, but it's giving us great momentum going into Thursday."

Bernadette Derosier (37-00.50) came in third in the women's long jump, while Clarence Robinson and Kadarius Williams placed third and fourth, respectively, in the men's high jump. Julian Maze came up big for the Lions (45-09.25), placing second in the men's triple jump; and Brandon Daniels (22-06.25) placed third in the men's long jump.

Rounding out the women's performances, five fourth-place finishes were recorded: Darichelle Sampson (55-meter dash & 4x400 meter relay), Charlyn Miller (55-meter hurdles), Domonique White (200-meter dash), Cydney MoreauTeirral Thompson, and Heather Fitzhenry (4x400-meter relay).

"The bad weather and the short week ahead of us may be challenging," said Brady. "But I think we will have another strong finish against even better competition."

The Lions will travel next week to Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the KMS Invitational.
