Privateer Cross Country Completes Azalea City Classic

MOBILE, Ala. - The New Orleans cross country teams continued their season with the 39th Azalea City Classic at the Mobile Fairgrounds on Saturday morning.
 
The UNO men's team finished in fifth place in a seven-team field while the Privateer women's team placed eighth out of 10 squads.
 
Competing at the 8K distance for the first time this year, Michael Batson was the top member of the UNO roster with an 18th place finish in a time of 26:22.92. Blake Robertson (26:49.40) and Edmund Pine (27:09.80) also placed in the top 30 for the Privateers. Robertson was 25th overall with Pine in 29th.
 
Other UNO male finishers included Clayton O'Callaghan (35th, 27:55.50), Drew Gathman (36th, 28:20.71), Dustin Kinard (39th, 28:26.62), Tre' Foreman (48th, 30:14.53), Logan Alonzo (49th, 30:56.99) and Michael Mahler (53rd, 30:14.53).
 
In the women's race, Sarah Booth (24:04) and Sam Pavlovich (24:15) were the top placed amongst the UNO competitors. Booth was 34th at the conclusion of the 6K race with Pavlovich placing 37th. Madison Matlock joined Booth and Pavlovich in the top 40 on the number, finishing the race in a time of 24:27.
 
Other finishers included Emily Martinez (43rd, 24:34), Hayley Guidry (52nd, 25:28) and Becky Callaway (29:27). Saturday's meet was the debut of Guidry, who missed the season opener two weeks ago.
 
Host USA was the top team in the men's race with 21 points. Four of the top five finishers in the event were Jaguars, including event winner Patrick Rohr (24:42.85), keeping the hosts clear of runner-up Louisiana-Lafayette (42 points).
 
UAB claimed the women's team trophy by racking up 20 points, outdistancing USA by 53 points. The Blazers had four of the top five finishers led by Elinor Kirk (21:11), who led 64 Division I competitors to the finish line.
 
The UNO cross country team will remain along I-10 with their next meet, heading west to Baton Rouge, La. on Sept. 21 for the LSU Invitational.
