Melancon Takes Another Shot Put Title as Cajuns Begin LSU Relays

BATON ROUGE – Myles Melancon posted a win in the shot put a second straight week and Scott Brewster and Anna Katherine Devitt claimed second place in distance races as the Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field team opened competition in the LSU Relays at Bernie Moore Track Stadium on Friday.
 
Melancon finished three feet further than the next closest competitor as he made it 2-for-2 in taking home first place in the shot put at the onset of the 2013 outdoor season.
 
Melancon recorded a shot put toss of 17.73m/58-2 which marked a career-best for the senior from St. Martinville (Teurlings Catholic HS). His previous best toss was 17.44m/57-2 ¾ at the 2011 Northwestern State Invitational. He was a full three feet ahead of runner-up Nicholas Banke of Akron (16.79m/55-1).
 
Melancon's toss was also three feet further than his first-place effort at last week's Louisiana Classics (16.83m/55-2 ¾).
 
Freshman Scott Brewster's second place finish in the men's 1,500 meter run was a time of 3:58.26. Brewster (Covington, La./St. Paul's) finished in a Top 3 that included LSU's  Phillip Primeaux (3:56.27) and Barrett Miller (3:58.38).
 
Devitt, a Baton Rouge native and product of Christian Life, took part in her first collegiate outdoor meet in her hometown and placed second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:34.66. Devitt eclipsed her Louisiana Classics 5,000 meter time of 18:15.67.
 
Justin Victor gave Louisiana another Top 5 performance in the field events, placing fourth in men's hammer throw with a toss of 56.28m/184-8. It was his second throw of 180-plus feet in the 2013 outdoor campaign (55.84m/183-2 in Louisiana Classics).
 
Kenneth Nassar's shot put toss of 16.43m/53-11 landed him third, giving the Cajuns two of the Top 3 in men's shot put.
 
Meredith Driskell reached her season-best clearance in the outdoor venue in women's pole vault. Driskell's clearance of 3.56m/11-8 surpassed the height of 3.45m/11-3 ¾ at last week's Louisiana Classics.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns continue competition in the LSU Relays on Saturday. The morning session is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the field events followed by the first events on the track at 11 a.m.
 
Freshman Lindsey Harmon, who claimed the event title in the Louisiana Classics women's high jump, is one of several Cajuns to watch in Saturday's action packed schedule of events. Harmon is scheduled to compete at 11 a.m.
 
Reigning Sun Belt female track athlete of the week Kacey Elphage takes in the 100 meter hurdles on Saturday at 2:45 p.m., competing in the section 1 timed finals. Elphage was the top collegian in the women's 100 meter hurdles in the Louisiana Classics, finishing second overall with a time of 13.54 seconds.
