Calhoun, Scott Named Academic All-Southland Conference

FRISCO, Texas - Junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun and sophomore javelin thrower Aja Scott both took home academic all conference honors as the Southland Conference announced its 2010-11 Academic All-Southland selections from the league office in Frisco on Wednesday.

"We are really excited that Sam and Aja were selected to the all-academic team," head coach Scott Williamson said. "They are great young women who work extremely hard not only athleticially but academically as well."

Calhoun led the way as an automatic selection having earned all-conference honors in both the 100 m and 200 m at the 2011 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships and maintaining a 3.16 GPA as an Allied Health major.

Calhoun turned in a banner 2010-11 campaign, becoming the first Colonel in school history to qualify for multiple events in NCAA postseason competition.  The Morgan City, La. native advanced to the NCAA National Championship East Preliminaries for the first time in her career by qualifying for both the 100 m and 200 m. 

Calhoun recorded a pair of top-40 performances at the East Prelims, holding her No. 37 east region ranking with a 37th-place time of 11.90 in the 100 m.  Calhoun also Improved her No. 41 east region ranking in the 200 m with a 30th place time of 24.31 at the East Prelims.  Combining her indoor and outdoor seasons, Calhoun had a hand in five school records (four personal, one relay) and three all-conference performances (two individual, one relay).

Meanwhile, Scott earned academic all-conference honors by maintaining an 3.16 ERA as a marketing major.  The St. Francisville native also turned in a banner year on the track, becoming just the second Nicholls athlete ever to qualify for consecutive NCAA National Championships by returning to the 2011 NCAA National Championship East Prelims. 

Scott finished
36th with a throw of 41.18 m at the East Prelims, and recorded a season and career best throw of 44.05 m (144 ft. 6 in.) at the Louisiana Classics on March 19, the fifth-best throw in the Southland Conference during the outdoor season.  Scott narrowly missed All-Southland Conference honors by finishing fifth at the 2011 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships with a mark of 40.83 m (133 ft. 11 in.).
