Cole-Lancoln Invitational Results

LAFAYETTE, La. -
A school record, an Canadian national qualifying mark and six event championships highlighted a dominating performance by the Nicholls State University women's track and field team as the Colonels wrapped up the regular season at the Cole Lancol Invitational hosted by UL-Lafayette on Saturday.

Freshman javelin thrower Jaimee Springer turned in the Colonels' most impressive performance of the day.  The Edmonton, Alberta native qualified for the Canadian Junior Championships later this summer by recording a throw of 44.71 m (146 ft. 8 in.), surpassing the qualifying standard for the championship meet and taking first place on the day.  Placing in the top three at the Canadian Junior Championships would qualify Springer to represent Canada at the Pan American Games this summer.

However, Springer wasn't the only freshman Nicholls thrower to turn in an impressive showing.  Kerri Simmons broke the school record in the shot put for the second time this season, launching a toss of 14.19 m (46 ft. 6.75 in.).  It marked the first 14 m throw in school history, bettered Simmons' previous school record of 13.95 m, and gave the Colonel thrower first place.

The Colonels added four more individual event titles on the day as senior high jumper Chelsea Dockrey cleared 1.68 m (5 ft. 6 in.) to take first place.  Meanwhile, on the track junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun and senior distance runner Jessica McLeod each brought home a pair of titles.

McLeod won the 1500 m by nearly seven seconds, clocking in with a time of 4:42.73 to take first.  The Clarendon, Jamaica native then clocked the top 800 m by a collegiate competitor with a 2:16.57 showing in the 800 m.

Calhoun, who set the school record in the 200 m run last week, recorded another strong showing in the event today, clocking in with a time of 24.39 to take first.  The Morgan City, La. native then turned in an 11.90 showing in the 100 m to give the Colonels their sixth title of the day.

With the 2011 regular season concluded, the Colonels will now prepare for the 2011 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 14-16 at Northwestern State.
