Colonel Track Takes Conference Leaders Into Ole Miss Invitational

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's track and field team, owner of the top mark in the conference in four events this season, will try to add to that total on Saturday as the Colonels head to the Ole Miss Invitational in Oxford, Miss. this weekend.

The Colonels are led by a trio of conference leaders who begin the weekend with four of the top event marks in the Southland Conference season.  Senior distance runner Kadi Whisnant leads the way with the best 1500 m and 3K steeplechase meters in the conference this season.  The Baton Rouge native owns a season best time of 4:34.07 in the 1500 m and a season-best time of 10:53.89 that ranks as the sixth best 3,000 m steeplechase time in Southland Conference history.

Junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun begins the weekend looking to strengthen her hold on the conference's fastest 100 m time.  The Morgan City, La. native has clocked a season-best time of 11.60 in the 100 m dash, tying her with Texas-San Antonio's Jhordan Hunter for the best time in the league this year.

Joining the Colonel runners in leading the conference is senior high jumper Chelsea Dockrey, who owns a season-best mark of 1.75 m (5 ft. 8.75 in.) in the high jump.

This weekend, the Colonels will look to add to their total number of conference leaders with several other Nicholls athletes in the race for conference leading marks.  In the javelin, sophomore Aja Scott and freshman Jaimee Springer are second and third in the conference and are within less than a meter of the conference lead.  In the 5K, senior distance runner Lauren Jones is just 13 seconds off the pace for the top time in the conference, and, in a crowded 4x100 m field, the Nicholls relay group is less than 0.3 seconds off the league leading time.

After the Colonels' trip to Ole Miss, Nicholls will head to the NSU Invitational in Natchitoches April 16.
