Colonels Rack Up Five School Records at LSU Relays

LSU Relays Final Results

BATON ROUGE -
After setting three school records on Friday, the Colonels added two more program records on Saturday as the Nicholls State University track and field team concluded the LSU Relays with a total of five school records on the weekend in Baton Rouge.

The Colonels turned in a strong showing on Friday, as junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun clocked in with a program record time of 11.79 in the 100 m dash to advance to Saturday's finals.  Joining her in school record fashion was freshman shot putter Kerri Simmons, whose 13.95 m throw was the best mark in school history.  The Colonel sprint medley team, consisting of juniors Calhoun and Katrina Bettard, freshman Tricia Carriere and senior Jessica McLeod, finished things off with a school record time of 4:02.68 on Friday evening.

Saturday, the Colonels picked up where they left off as seniors Kadi Whisnant and McLeod each bettered the program standard in the 1500 m run.  Whisnant broke her own school record by clocking in at 4:34.06 to finish second among college competitors and better the school record by nearly two full seconds.  McLeod was hot on her heels, clocking in at 4:35.77 to finish fourth.

McLeod also had a hand in the Colonels' second school record of the day, helping Nicholls to a second place time of 12:16.88 in the distance medley relay.  McLeod, senior Imma Kosgei, freshman Jackie White and senior Lauren Jones combined to better the school's previous DMR record by nearly 12 seconds.

The Colonels would have collected their third school record of the day and sixth of the weekend as Calhoun finished third in the finals of the 100 m dash.  The Morgan City, La. native clocked in at 11.60, which would have shattered the school record of 11.79 she set the day before, had it not been for a 5.6 m/s tailwind that was beyond the maximum allowable wind speeds.

Nicholls will return to action at the Pepsi Relays hosted by the University of Florida April 1 and 2.
